Who are PEERS2PEERS Educators?
- PEER educators are University of Pittsburgh students, both men and women, who have a sincere interest in confronting the issue of sexual assault on campus through education.
- PEER educators have strong communication skills and can respond effectively to potentially strong opinions and emotions that may arise.
What is the role of PEER educators?
- PEERS2PEERS is a volunteer student outreach program sponsored by Sexual Assault Services.
- The program's mission is to create an awareness of the dynamics of sexual assault and reduce the incidence of sexual victimization at the University of Pittsburgh.
- Through educational programming, the peer educators teach other students about the importance of self-assessment, respect for others, assertive communication, personal boundaries, and the role of alcohol in forced sex situations.
- The peer educators facilitate discussions on sexual assault as a societal issue and the responsibility of males and females to work together to prevent it from happening.
How do PEER educators educate their peers?
- The PEERS2PEERS program is based on the concept of "students teaching students". This is an extremely useful vehicle in addressing the issue of sexual assault on campus.
- PEER educators present workshops on issues, such as, dating behaviors, power dynamics in relationships, sex role stereotypes, sexual communication, etc.
- Presentations are given in classrooms, residence halls, sorority/fraternity chapters, and as requested.
